WWDC 2012 Preview: What has Apple been cooking up?

We?re just a few days away before Apple takes the stage at WWDC and announces updates to products that many of you have been drooling at the mouth over. While we may not see the new iPhone in the flesh ? or metal, we?re pretty sure we?re going to get a taste of iOS 6, and a few more products along the way.

iOS 6

Since we?re pretty Into Mobile, iOS 6 is by far the biggest thing we?re expecting to see out of the show. While we have a few ideas as to what Apple has up its sleeve, we?re more than aware that there?s much more that we don?t know.

iMaps

While we don?t know exactly what it will be called, we?re definitely expecting to see Apple introduce its own Maps application for iOS. We?ve seen leaks of said application already, so it?s pretty much a given. Further distancing itself from Google, Apple?s Maps solution should be easy on the eyes at very least, and possibly ready to go toe-to-toe with Google?s upcoming Earth and Maps updates for mobile.

To pre-empt Apple?s move, Google held their own event for its maps application. The event looks like it was thrown together quickly but not what was shown off. The big takeaways from Google?s event were that the Earth application will soon receive a 3D mapping solution that looked pretty stunning in the demos that were shown off. Google detailed how they achieved their 3D structures, and touched on the process to make Google Earth look as if the user is looking down on the world from a plane when navigating through the app.

Google also announced an offline mode for its Maps application on Android devices, which many were pleased to see.

Are Google?s efforts to keep the hype of Apple?s Maps application to a minimum going to pay off? We?ll just have to wait and see, but something tells us that Apple will have more than a few wow-ing features.

Siri Improvements

Love her or hate her, Siri is here to stay. Apple?s popular voice assistant may get some great improvements next week, which could allow for a better experience through and through. While voice recognition software isn?t really where it needs to be at this point in time for mobile, it can only improve and we may see just what Apple has been working on with Siri.

Facebook Integration

Apple may have snubbed Facebook by only allowing Twitter integration in iOS 5, but that doesn?t mean it couldn?t happen in the upcoming version of iOS. Facebook certainly isn?t going anywhere and it would just make sense to include this type of integration into iOS 6 without needing to use the still crappy Facebook application.

?

Notification Bar Widget SDK

We wouldn?t be surprised if this ended up being absent from WWDC, but we?d love to see Apple open up the notification widgets to developers. While full-fledged widgets likely won?t be happening anytime soon in iOS, the option to have third-party widgets tucked away in your notification panel may indeed be a worthy?compromise.

Everything Else

We?re sure that Apple has a lot more to announce other than the latest version of iOS. That said, we?re going to keep it light since the rest is not as mobile as we?d like it to be.

Apple is likely to announce a Mac refresh. From the Air to iMac, Apple may set the world on fire with updated hardware across the board. Rumors are swirling around that the new MacBook line may be sporting Retina Displays, which would definitely be something to behold. Expect the products to retain their premium quality (and pricing), ?just like everything else Apple.

A possible whopper of an?announcement?could concern Apple TV. We?re not necessarily speaking of the actual TV that Apple is most definitely working on but more on the software side of things. Apple may introduce a TV SDK to developers, which would do nothing but put the late Google TV a few feet deeper into the already-dug grave plot its made for itself.

Another possible wow-ing announcement could be that Apple might finally announce the iPhone on T-Mobile.

What are some iOS features that you?d like to see from Apple?s latest and greatest? Sound off in the comments below!

Paolo Gabriele Faces Trial, And Eyes Turn To Vatican Judicial System

VATICAN CITY (RNS) Pope Benedict XVI's former butler is facing up to eight years in jail for allegedly stealing confidential documents from the pope's own desk. But according to a Vatican judge, Paolo Gabriele won't be serving any time in the world's smallest state.

Paolo Papanti Pelletier, a law professor at Rome's Tor Vergata University who also serves as one of the Vatican court's judges, told journalists on Tuesday (June 5) that people who are sentenced to a jail term in the Vatican City State are routinely sent to an Italian prison because the Vatican doesn't have its own jail system.

Paolo Gabriele, who served as Benedict's "assistente di camera" until his arrest two weeks ago, appeared on Tuesday for a hearing with the Vatican investigating judge, Piero Antonio Bonnet, in the presence of his two lawyers and Nicola Picardi, the Vatican prosecutor.

Bonnet will decide whether Gabriele will have to stand trial or be acquitted.

The pope's former butler is now in custody in one of the Vatican's four "safe rooms" -- 12 feet by 12 feet rooms with a bed, a desk, a window, a bathroom and a crucifix, Papanti Pelletier said.

Gabriele, he stressed, is treated with the "utmost respect" and, when he attended Mass on Sunday in a "Vatican church," he was escorted by two Vatican police officers but was not handcuffed.

Gabriele is accused of "aggravated theft," a crime that carries a prison sentence of one to six years, which could be extended to eight years if more than one "aggravating factor" is found. Additional charges such as "revealing state secrets" may carry maximum sentences of up to five years.

Vatican criminal law, according to Papanti Pelletier, envisions "very mild" sentences: "In Italy, prison sentences are much harsher," he said.

In the Vatican's three-tiered court system, if the pope's butler is to stand trial he will first be judged by the three-man tribunal of which Papanti Pelletier is a member. While the current investigation is secret, the trial would be public, he said.

The tribunal's sentence can be referred to an appeals court and, ultimately, to a supreme court manned by three cardinals, presided by American Cardinal Raymond L. Burke. This is the only Vatican tribunal that can try other cardinals, should one of the "princes of the church" be found to be involved in the Vatileaks case.

In a TV interview on Monday (June 4), the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, described the leaks as "carefully aimed, and sometimes also ferocious, destructive and organized."

Pope Benedict XVI has the power to pardon Gabriele at any moment but, according to Papanti Pelletier, it's expected that he would wait for the trial to be over before deciding how or if to intervene.

Claiming Society for God Religious Movements and Social Welfare ...

clip_image001

Now available from Indiana University Press:

?Illuminating intersections of religion and public life in four different nations, this book is topical. Given that two of these nations are in the Middle East and one of them is Egypt, it is timely, even urgent.? ?R. Stephen Warner, University of Illinois at Chicago
Claiming Society for God focuses on common strategies employed by religiously orthodox, ?fundamentalist? movements around the world. Rather than employing terrorism, as much of post-9/11 thinking suggests, these movements use a patient, under-the-radar strategy of infiltrating and subtly transforming civil society. Nancy J. Davis and Robert V. Robinson tell the stories of the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt, Shas in Israel, Comunione e Liberazione in Italy, and the Salvation Army in the United States. They show how these movements are building massive grassroots networks of religiously based social service agencies, hospitals, schools, and businesses to bring their own brand of faith to the center of society.

U.S. piles pressure on Europe for fiscal, financial union

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States piled pressure on European governments on Tuesday to take a bold step toward financial and fiscal union to prevent the euro zone debt crisis from further derailing a stumbling global economic recovery.

Finance ministers from the Group of Seven major industrialized economies reviewed the global economy and financial markets while also discussing policy responses, including "progress towards financial and fiscal union in Europe," the U.S. Treasury said after hosting an emergency conference call on the crisis.

It was the first official statement from any G7 member country to acknowledge that European Union leaders are actively working on a sweeping plan for deeper political integration, long pressed by the United States and financial markets as a way to underpin the future of the euro currency.

The statement followed comments by German Chancellor Angela Merkel that "the world needs to know how we conceive a political union that will accompany monetary union."

While the United States is anxious to play the role of trusted adviser and not appear to dictate solutions to Europe, Obama administration officials are working intensely behind the scenes in nudging Europe toward firmer and faster action.

They would like to see the makings of a plan by the time leaders of the Group of 20 largest economies hold a summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, on June 18-19.

The sharp selloff in stock markets on European worries over the past month and a rush into the safety of the U.S. dollar has unnerved world leaders. Growth is slowing in every major economy, and for U.S. President Barack Obama, it could cost him re-election.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper said the world could not afford to have Europe lurching from crisis to crisis.

"I don't want to sound too alarmist, but we are kind of running out of runway here. And in terms of structure of the euro zone and in terms of addressing these problems, we do need to see a broader game plan," he told CBC television on Tuesday.

IMMEDIATE STEPS

But a grand political plan, which would take years to implement, is not enough to stabilize the current situation. Spain on Tuesday said it was essentially locked out of financial markets, and its banks need help.

One senior G20 official said that the United States was pressing behind closed doors for two immediate steps - European bank recapitalization and a guarantee system for its bank depositors to prevent bank runs.

Another G20 official said Europe was being pressed to find a backstop both for its banks and for its sovereign governments.

While senior U.S. officials have declined to talk publicly about any specific remedies they are urging, stressing that Europe has the capacity to solve its own problems, on Tuesday they drove home the message that Europe needed to address the shortcomings of monetary union urgently.

U.S. Treasury Undersecretary Lael Brainard, who just returned from a whirlwind five-city tour of Europe to discuss the crisis, said she expected Europe to move "toward greater union on the fiscal front, greater union on financial front."

"These are critical complements to their monetary union," she added.

Mark Sobel, a senior deputy assistant secretary at the Treasury, said Europe was moving with a "heightened sense of urgency," and he expected action within the next few weeks.

"Movement to strengthen the European banking system will be of particular importance," he noted.

Michael Froman, a senior Obama adviser, also called for a comprehensive European plan that included short-, medium- and long-term measures. Europe's leaders are "seized with the importance of this and the urgency of these issues," he said.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde added to the chorus for Europe to provide a roadmap on its future political shape, something investors are clamoring for as well.

"The master plan that everybody signs up to will be important because it will set a vision, it will set a collective determination. And that is lacking at the moment," she said in an interview with Reuters.

On Capitol Hill, concern is mounting after a closely-watched monthly jobs report on Friday showed the U.S. economy added a paltry 69,000 jobs in May with the national unemployment rate rising a notch to 8.2 percent.

New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley and World Bank chief Robert Zoellick were peppered with questions on Europe at a closed-door meeting arranged by senators to discuss the stalemate over the U.S. budget.

Republican Senator Roy Blunt told reporters there was "substantial concern about what is happening in Europe and whether we would be in a position to respond to worldwide economic problems" before U.S. elections in November.

Republican Senator Bob Corker, a senior member of the Banking Committee, planned to discuss the crisis with Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, who testifies to Congress on Thursday.

"I've got a phone call today with the chairman of the Fed. I met with him the week before last. I'm doing my own briefings. We're on the phone non-stop," he said.

Lin at Lunch: Tico | BeantownEats {We Eat It. You Read It.} - Boston ...

After dining at Happys Bar and Kitchen, I was even more excited to check out another of Michael Schlow?s restaurants: Tico. Located at 222 Berkeley St, it draws a large lunch crowd of Copley Square professionals and Boston visitors alike. It also is a great location for Jon to meet me for lunch!

Timeline

12:30: We arrived at exactly 12:30 and were seated immediately with lunch menus.
12:32: Server took our drink order.
12:35: Server returned with drinks: water and an Arnold Palmer. We placed our order for lunch.
12:41: Food arrived.

Jon went with a light and refreshing Chilled Shrimp Salad. ?The highlight of this salad was the dressing; flavorful but not overpowering, allowing the natural flavors of the ingredients to stand out, rather than be smothered in dressing. Perfectly crisp bacon adds flavor and texture to otherwise healthy ingredients. The entree-sized portion left Jon happy and?satisfied.

Chilled Shrimp Salad with Avocado, String Beans, Bacon and Pickled Shallots ($14)

When we saw house-made pastrami on the lunch menu, we knew one of us had to try it. ?Growing up in New Jersey with New York delis within his reach, Jon is our resident deli expert, and Tico?s passed the test. Smothered in Swiss cheese, this pastrami sandwich is set apart from others by an unexpected kick encountered, either in the mustard or perhaps the meat itself. ?Chipotle mayo is served on the side, adding to the spice of the sandwich while at the same time providing a coolness from the mayo.

House Made Pastrami Sandwich with melted Swiss on Rye with Deli Mustard ($14)

12:57 Finished our meal.
1:01 Check was delivered, and promptly picked back up by our server to complete payment.
1:03 Credit card returned.

Not only was this a great meal, it was a great meal in a short amount of time, making Tico a perfect lunch destination. ?So often sit-down restaurants have a more leisure lunch, but something shorter is perfect for professionals with a lunch hour time frame. ?I even had time to walk from work to Tico (about 15 minutes) and be back just over an hour later. Great food, reasonable prices, and efficient use of time; that?s lunch at Tico.

What?s your number one criteria for a good lunch spot?

Defiant Assad rejects role in Houla massacre

President Bashar al-Assad dismissed on Sunday accusations his government had any role in the brutal Houla massacre, as he charged forces outside Syria of plotting to destroy the country.

In a rare televised address to parliament, Assad, dressed in a smart suit and tie, said even "monsters" were incapable of carrying out massacres such as last month's killings near the town of Houla in central Syria.

At least 108 people, including 49 children and 34 women, were slaughtered in the massacre which started on May 25 and spilled into the next day, triggering international outrage.

Assad's defiant speech came as Arab leaders called on the United Nations to act to stop bloodshed in Syria, and France raised the prospect of military action against Damascus under a UN mandate.

"What happened in Houla and elsewhere are brutal massacres which even monsters would not have carried out," the Syrian leader said.

"The masks have fallen and the international role in the Syrian events is now obvious," he said in his first address to the assembly since a May 7 parliamentary election, adding the polls were the perfect response "to the criminal killers and those who finance them".

Assad also paid tribute to civilian and military "martyrs" of the violence in Syria, saying their blood was not shed in vain.

"We are not facing a political problem but a project to destroy the country," Assad said, adding there would be "no dialogue" with opposition groups which "seek foreign intervention."

"Terrorism cannot be part of the political process," said Assad, who had last spoken in public in January.

In Sunday's speech which lasted more than an hour, he dismissed the impact in Syria of uprisings sweeping the Arab world, saying those demonstrating and fighting against his rule were paid to do so.

"Some are unemployed, they receive money for participating in demonstrations," he said.

On Saturday, violence in Syria killed 89 people, including 57 soldiers, the largest number of casualties the military has suffered in a single day since an uprising began in March 2011, a watchdog said.

As Arab leaders called for UN action, France, which spearheaded a NATO air assault against Libyan dictator Moamer Kadhafi last year, said it has not excluded military intervention in Syria.

France "has not excluded military intervention" in Syria, but only under a UN mandate, Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said, while urging Russia to drop its backing for Assad.

He said that "the Russians have to understand that the future of Syria is not to be considered" with Assad still in power.

"Until then we have to increase pressure, increase sanctions, mobilise public opinion and isolate (Assad) as much as possible -- and make those who still support him lose interest, and I'm thinking of Russia of course," Le Drian said.

On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin stood firm against growing pressure over Moscow's position on Syria, opposing foreign military intervention and raising doubts about sanctions.

Human Rights Watch singled out Russian firm Rosoboronexport in a statement that called on the international community to stop signing deals with firms that provide arms to Assad's regime which could make them "an accomplice to crimes against humanity."

Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal accused Assad of "manoeuvring" to gain time.

"Every initiative has been accepted by the Syrian regime and was not implemented. This is a way used by the regime to gain time," Prince Saud told reporters in the Red Sea city of Jeddah in a joint news conference with UN chief Ban ki-moon.

"He is playing for time and manoeuvring," he said referring to Assad.

Washington and Moscow agreed on the need to work together on Syria, a US official said following a phone conversation between US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"Her message to him was: 'We've got to start working together to help the Syrians with Syria's political transition strategy. And I want our people to work together on ideas in Moscow, Europe, in Washington, wherever we need to'."

At a meeting in Doha, international peace envoy Kofi Annan warned: "The spectre of an all-out war with a worrying sectarian dimension grows by the day."

"The situation is complex and it takes everyone involved in the conflict to act responsibly if the violence is to stop. But the first responsibility lies in the Syrian government and President Assad," he said.

The Arab League's ministerial committee on Syria has called on Annan to set a deadline for the terms of his peace initiative to be met.

Chapter VII outlines action the Security Council might take, including military force, in response to threats to international peace, breaches of the peace and acts of aggression.

Tensions from Syria have also spilled across into neighbouring Lebanon, where clashes between pro- and anti-Damascus gunmen left 14 dead and 48 wounded over the weekend in the northern city of Tripoli, security officials said.

The Observatory says as many as 2,300 of the more than 13,400 people killed in Syria since the uprising erupted in March 2011 have died since the so-called ceasefire began on April 12.

Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's Ousted President, Goes From War Hero To Convict

CAIRO -- War hero. Savior of the nation. An anchor of stability in a turbulent region. And in the twilight of his life, a criminal convicted for his role in the deaths of those fighting to oust him.

Hosni Mubarak was sentenced Saturday to life in prison after a court convicted him on charges of complicity in the killing of protesters during the 2011 uprising that forced him from power. His two sons ? Gamal and Alaa ? were acquitted on corruption charges.

It was an inglorious end for a leader who rose to power after Islamic extremists assassinated his predecessor Anwar Sadat and then steered the nation through the turmoil that swept the Middle East buffeted by wars, terrorism and religious extremism.

The frail, 84-year-old Mubarak heard the verdict from a gurney in the defendants' cage, surrounded by his sons and former officials who stood in the dock to answer for the crimes of his nearly 30-year rule. The decision can be appealed.

That scene was in stark contrast to the image Mubarak had sought to portray as the rock-solid "father of the nation." In the early days of his rule, Mubarak's stern, colorless demeanor was a welcome change from the destructive charisma of Gamal Abdel-Nasser and the mercurial style of Sadat.

As Mubarak clung to power, the status quo that he personified became increasingly loathed. Like the Great Sphinx that sits immutable through the millennia, this ancient land once revered as the vibrant leader of the Arab world stagnated. Its masses struggled to feed and clothe themselves while countries of the Gulf ? once little more than desert oases ? seized the role that Egypt once enjoyed.

At home, Mubarak and his aging coterie of generals and business tycoons were unable to check boiling currents of popular fury, or harness the history unfolding in his nation of 85 million ? the most populous in the Arab world.

A former pilot and air force commander with a combative, stubborn streak, Mubarak took tentative steps toward democratic reform early in his presidency but pulled back toward the dictatorial style that eventually propelled the protests against him that began on Jan. 25, 2011.

A 2009 cable from the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, released by the secret-sharing WikiLeaks website, called him "a tried and true realist, innately cautious and conservative," and with "little time for idealistic goals."

It noted that Mubarak disapproved of the 2003 U.S. invasion that toppled Saddam Hussein of Iraq, which he believed was in need of a "'tough, strong military officer who is fair'" as leader.

"This telling observation, we believe, describes Mubarak's own view of himself as someone who is tough but fair, who ensures the basic needs of his people," the cable said. "In Mubarak's mind, it is far better to let a few individuals suffer than risk chaos for society as a whole."

Yet that very image of cautious stability was once welcomed in the West, which feared that Sadat's death in a hail of gunfire at a military parade would unleash a wave of unrest that would scuttle the fledgling peace with Israel at a time when America and its allies were panicked over the rise of militant Islam in Iran.

Instead, Mubarak maintained the peace with Israel and kept Egypt free of the grip of Islamic extremism. He struggled with the problems that have long bedeviled the Arab world: choking corruption, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and religious militancy. Economic reforms spurred growth, but the fruits trickled only to a few.

He engineered Egypt's return to the Arab fold after nearly a decade in the cold over its 1979 peace treaty with Israel.

Early on, Mubarak crushed an insurgency by Muslim extremists, whose ranks had produced Sadat's assassins and some future al-Qaida leaders. In the 1990s, he fought hard against another resurgence of Muslim militants whose attacks included the slaughter of dozens of foreign tourists at the temple city of Luxor.

Eli Shaked, who served as Israel's ambassador to Egypt from 2003-2005, described Mubarak as "a strong presence, not charismatic but with a heavy body like a fighter bomber, and very levelheaded."

Shaked said Mubarak met visiting Israeli officials with at least three top advisers by his side, often consulting with them and demonstrating a detailed knowledge of Israeli politics. The Israeli said Mubarak liked "political jokes and witticisms," but was short on creativity: "The man is completely status quo."

Mohammed Hosni Mubarak was born on May 4, 1928, in the village of Kafr el-Moseilha in the Nile delta province of Menoufia. His family, like Sadat's and Nasser's, was lower middle class.

After joining the air force in 1950, Mubarak moved up the ranks as a bomber pilot and instructor and rose to leadership positions. He earned nationwide acclaim as commander of the air force during the 1973 Middle East war ? a conflict which many Egyptians see as a victory ? and was vice president when Sadat was assassinated. Mubarak, who was sitting beside Sadat in the reviewing stand, escaped with a minor hand injury.

In his early days, Mubarak made popular moves that held up promise of a more open society, including freeing 1,500 politicians, journalists and clerics jailed during Sadat's last months in office.

But hopes for broader reform dimmed. Mubarak was re-elected in staged, one-man referendums in which he routinely won more than 90 percent approval. He became more aloof, carefully choreographing his public appearances, and his authoritarian governance, buttressed by harsh emergency laws, fueled resentment.

Age took its toll on the president, who was once an avid squash player with a consistent style that matched his personality. He became hard of hearing, and was so devastated by the death of a 12-year-old grandson in 2009 that he canceled a trip to the United States.

Egypt's influence in the Middle East, meanwhile, waned as the militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah and their patron, Iran, gained momentum and followers. The oil-rich countries of Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates seized the mantle of leadership regional leadership. The growing profile of Turkey, a democracy led by an Islam-inspired government, also chipped away at Egypt's heavyweight stature in the region.

In 2005, Mubarak held the country's first contested presidential election, an event marred by charges of voter fraud and intimidation. He retrenched when opponents made gains in ensuing parliamentary elections, launching a harsh campaign of arrests against the Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's biggest and best organized opposition group that now dominates the parliament elected after Mubarak's downfall.

Before the protests began, Mubarak had been silent on whether he intended to seek re-election in September. But the quick rise of his son, Gamal, through the ruling party caused immense anxiety.

The fear that Mubarak was grooming Gamal, a wealthy businessman, to succeed him left many Egyptians feeling trapped in the past, deprived of change and renewal. Then, the uprising in Tunisia delivered an electrifying message: an old order can be ousted.

Mubarak initially responded to protests by saying he would not seek another term, and his government said Gamal Mubarak would not run, either. But the president rejected demands that he step down immediately, telling ABC News that he'd like to leave but feared the country would sink deeper into chaos without him.

It was a persuasive argument for 29 years, but in 2011 it was overwhelmed by the cries of huge crowds in Cairo's Tahrir Square: "Leave! Leave!"

Monkey lip smacks provide new insights into the evolution of human speech

Monkey lip smacks provide new insights into the evolution of human speech [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 31-May-2012

University of Vienna

Scientists have traditionally sought the evolutionary origins of human speech in primate vocalizations, such as monkey coos or chimpanzee hoots. But unlike these primate calls, human speech is produced using rapid, controlled movements of the tongue, lips and jaw. Speech is also learned, while primate vocalizations are mostly innately structured. New research published in Current Biology by W. Tecumseh Fitch, Head of the Department of Cognitive Biology at the University of Vienna, supports the idea that human speech evolved less from vocalizations than from communicative facial gestures.

Researchers at Princeton and the University of Vienna used x-ray movies to investigate lip-smacking gestures in macaque monkeys. Lip smacks are made by many monkey species in friendly, face-to-face situations (e.g. between mothers and their infants). Although lip-smacking makes a quiet sound (similar to "p p p p"), it is not accompanied by phonation, which is produced by vocal cord vibration in the "voice box" or larynx.

Although superficially lip-smacking appears to involve simply rapid opening and closing of the lips, the x-ray movies show that lip-smacking is actually a complex behaviour, requiring rapid, coordinated movements of the lips, jaw, tongue and the hyoid bone (which provides the supporting skeleton for the larynx and tongue). Furthermore these movements occur at a rate of about 5 cycles per second, the same as speech, and are much faster than chewing movements (about 2.5 cycles per second). Thus, although lip smacking superficially resembles "fake chewing", it is in fact very different, and more like speech.

Fascinating facial signals

These observations support a long-standing hypothesis of Peter MacNeilage and his colleagues that the roots of human speech do not lie in primate vocalizations, but are closer to these fascinating facial signals used for communication by monkeys. In particular, the alternation between vowel and consonant that generates speech syllables is strikingly similar to the movements underlying lip-smacking.

Intriguingly, chimpanzees also make communicative sounds with their lips, including both loud lip smacks and lip buzzes ("raspberries"). These lip gestures appear to be under voluntary control, and can be learned (unlike hoots or grunts). Similarly, orangutans can learn to whistle: again a sound produced using the lips and tongue, rather than the larynx.

Together, these data from our primate cousins support the idea that the origins of speech might be found in an evolutionary combination of "traditional" phonation (sounds produced by the vocal cords, in the larynx) with rapid, learned movements of the vocal tract, which have stronger similarities to primate facial signals than to their innate calls. But the origin of the "singing" component of speech, which requires voluntary control over the larynx, remains mysterious.
