Army to the rescue again - this time to fill seats

LONDON (Reuters) - British troops brought in at short notice to help with security at the Olympic Games were summoned to the rescue for a second time on Sunday - this time in the less arduous role of filling empty seats.

The Games organising committee, LOCOG, turned to the army again after television footage of rows of empty seats at many venues caused outrage among Britons who had tried and failed to buy tickets under a complex allocation system.

"LOCOG has kindly offered service men and women working on venue security to make use of unutilised seating when they are off duty," a Ministry of Defence spokesman said.

"These seats will be made available to venue security personnel to utilise on a voluntary basis when off duty."

Earlier this month, the government was forced to deploy an extra 3,500 troops - some of them just back from stints in Afghanistan - after private contractor G4S failed to meet its commitment to supply 10,400 security guards.

The armed forces are now in charge of airport-style checks at several venues including the media centres, easing safety concerns in a city that was hit by bombing attacks in 2005, hours after being awarded the Olympics.

Troops from the elite Parachute Regiment have been searching buses at a roadblock going into the Olympic park.

One soldier with 18 years' service told Reuters he had learned only on Tuesday that he would be on Games duty, sharing makeshift accommodation in a room with 30 others in east London, and had had to cancel his holiday and break the news to his wife.

Others, enjoying the unexpected bonus of tickets to the women's gymnastics on Sunday, said they had been told they could not speak to the press.

The army enjoys strong public support in Britain, a reflection of widespread sympathy and respect for its losses in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Troops are not normally deployed at home except to guarantee essential public services during emergencies.

Analysis: US dilemma in South China Sea response

WASHINGTON (AP) ? China has heightened tensions in the South China Sea with its new, remote island city and planned military garrison in a contested area viewed as a potential flashpoint for conflict in the Asia-Pacific.

How might the United States respond?

Criticize Beijing too strongly and the Obama administration will strain its relationship with the emerging superpower. Let it pass and undermine two years of intense diplomacy that has promoted the U.S. standing among Southeast Asian nations that are intimidated by China's rise.

A key plank of the administration's engagement in the Asia-Pacific since 2010 has been its declaration of a U.S. national interest in the maintenance of peace and stability in the South China Sea, where China and five of its neighbors ? most notably the Philippines and Vietnam ? have competing territorial claims.

But tensions have only escalated. China's raising of the flag this week at Sansha municipality, on tiny Yongxing island, 220 miles (350 kilometers) from its southernmost province of Hainan, come as claimants jockey for influence in the resource-rich region.

China will not be able to project much military power from such a small outpost ? with a population of just 1,000 people and scarcely room for an airstrip ? but it has symbolic importance. Beijing says the municipality will administer hundreds of thousands of square miles (kilometers) of water where it wants to strengthen its control over disputed ? and potentially oil-rich ? islands.

In Washington, lawmakers interested in Asia policy have been quick to respond. Republican Sen. John McCain called the move provocative and reinforced worries that China would attempt to impose its territorial claims through intimidation and coercion. Democratic Sen. Jim Webb said China's attempt to assert control of disputed territories may be a violation of international law.

While the State Department was careful in its reaction, it also criticized China's "unilateral moves."

"I think there is a concern here, that they are beginning to take actions when we want to see all of these issues resolved at the table," spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said Thursday.

President Barack Obama will not want to appear soft on China as he fights for re-election against Republican contender Mitt Romney, who has accused the incumbent of being weak on Beijing and has vowed to get tough, in particular, on China's trading practices.

However, the United States walks a fine line in its diplomacy on the South China Sea, always stressing it does not take a position on the competing sovereignty claims.

Defining it as a U.S. national interest in 2010 helped galvanize Washington's standing in the region and revive its ties with treaty ally Manila and build a relationship with former enemy Hanoi. As part of its broader push, or "pivot," toward Asia, the U.S. elevated its engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, and strongly supports the 10-nation bloc's efforts to negotiate collectively with China on the issue and draft a code of conduct to help manage South China Sea disputes.

That's annoyed China, which claims virtually the entire South China Sea and its island groups and would prefer to negotiate with the other claimants individually. Beijing also views U.S. intervention on the issue as encouraging Vietnam and the Philippines to be more confrontational in asserting their own claims.

When Chinese fishing boats were stopped by the Philippine vessels at the disputed Scarborough Shoal in April, inside what Manila regards as its exclusive economic zone, it deployed a navy ship ? supplied by the U.S. the previous year ? prompting China to send more vessels of its own, escalating a standoff that rumbles on.

And the establishment of Sansha municipality in another portion of the South China Sea follows Vietnam's passing a law in June stating its jurisdiction over the Paracel and Spratly Island chains and declaring that all foreign naval ships entering these areas must notify Vietnamese authorities.

The chance of such disputes spiraling into a major conflict still appears slim, but the stakes could rise in the years ahead as competition intensifies for the oil and gas resources in the South China Sea. China recently put out for tender exploration offshore blocks that overlap with areas already tendered by Vietnam, and Philippine drilling plans could also put it on collision course with China.

The U.S. strategy for managing and eventually resolving these disputes largely hangs on the efforts of ASEAN. The bloc has made some progress in drafting a code of conduct, but there's no sign of a lasting resolution of territorial disputes, and the South China Sea is emerging as a divisive issue in a grouping that prizes its unity.

For the first time in its 45-year history, ASEAN failed to issue at communique at an annual meeting of its 10 foreign ministers this month, when host Cambodia, viewed as pro-Beijing, rejected a proposal by the Philippines and Vietnam to mention their separate territorial disputes with China in the statement.

In a damage-limitation exercise, ASEAN's largest nation, Indonesia, brokered a compromise last week. But it's one that will do little to assuage concerns of a rift within the grouping and a narrative that the Obama administration will be anxious to avoid: that the struggle over the South China Sea pits the strategic interests of the U.S. against China.

Hiker dies after plunging off cliff into Alaska river

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- A hiker has died after falling into a river in a remote part of northern Alaska, ?the U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday. His companion was rescued by helicopter.

The Coast Guard did not release the identity or nationality of the victim, who slipped off a cliff in the Brooks Range on Wednesday night. The companion, Olaf Schooll of Norway, was rescued, the Coast Guard said in a statement.


The two men had been trying to hike across the northern part of Alaska, from the Canadian border to the Bering Sea, the statement said.

The accident occurred at Atigun Gorge, a spot about 240 miles southeast of Barrow, it said.

Schooll used a satellite telephone to call for help, the statement said. A Coast Guard air crew found him, hoisted him into a helicopter and flew him to Barrow.

More Alaska coverage from NBC?station KTUU in Anchorage

Crew members found his dead companion about a mile downstream in the Atigun River, but terrain and water conditions prevented the recovery of the man's body at that time, the Coast Guard said. Searchers were attempting on Thursday to recover the body.

Man City expose Arsenal weaknesses

Manchester City exposed problems in the heart of Arsenal's defence to seal a 2-0 friendly victory at Beijing's Olympic stadium on Friday.

Two goals just before half-time from Pablo Zabaleta and Yaya Toure proved enough for the Premier League champions against an Arsenal side without many of its key players -- including wantaway captain Robin van Persie.

The striker has been at the centre of transfer speculation linking him to both Manchester clubs. City boss Roberto Mancini earlier this week said he was a keen admirer of the Dutchman.

Arsenal started brightly in torrential rain at the "bird's nest" stadium.

Theo Walcott -- known as Xiao Laohu, or tiger cub in Chinese -- burst through the right on four minutes to cross for fellow England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, but the chance was snuffed out by Stefan Savic.

Ten minutes later Gervinho weaved inside the box to lay off to Walcott, whose effort was blocked.

Walcott then created a chance for himself, much to the delight of the home crowd, who cheered his every move.

The forward made space just beyond the left-hand side of the penalty box, but his attempt to curl the ball into the right corner went narrowly wide.

Moments later Carlos Tevez darted into the box and attempted to play himself through by clipping the ball around Arsenal rookie Carl Jenkinson.

But the Argentinian pushed the ball too far and it ended up safely in the hands of Arsenal's reserve keeper Lukasz Fabianski.

City were beginning to gain the upper hand and went in front five minutes before half-time.

Defender Jenkinson was caught out of position and Yaya Toure dribbled beautifully into space before laying the ball off for the in-coming Zabaleta, who drilled home from inside the box.

City made it 2-0 just three minutes later, again taking advantage of some poor defending from Arsenal.

The dangerous-looking Aleksandar Kolarov ran into space down the left and cut a deep ball into the box which was laid off by Sergio Aguero for Yaya Toure to tap in from close range.

City took their foot off the pedal in the second half and defended deep, much to the frustration of Arsenal.

Oxlade-Chamberlain was unfortunate not to pull one back for Arsenal when he hit a rasping shot from the edge of the area which bounced off both posts.

Half-way through the second half, Tevez jostled past Kieran Gibbs to find space for himself on the right. He crossed for Aguero, who somehow missed the target from close range.

Two newly traded tech companies, Zynga and Facebook, both reported quarterly earnings that disappointed investors. Others will be reporting in the coming weeks.

Here's a look at earnings reports from some tech companies that had IPOs since last year. The companies are all loosely Internet-related, though their businesses vary widely.

? Wednesday: Zynga Inc. says it lost money and received less revenue than anticipated in the second quarter because "CityVille," ''FarmVille" and other games are not attracting as many paying players as they should. Its stock tanked and dragged Facebook's shares as well because the social networking icon relies on Zynga for a good chunk of its revenue ? 12 percent last year. Revenue fell below Wall Street forecast, while expenses grew. The company says the number of players increased only because it got more players from its acquisition of OMGPop, the maker of the mobile game "Draw Something." Zynga began trading on Dec. 16, 2011.

Angie's List Inc. reports that its losses are still piling up as the company spends more to lure people to its online business-review service and persuade them to pay to see ratings on everything from plastic surgeons to sewer cleaners. Angie's List began trading on Nov. 17, 2011.

? Thursday: Facebook Inc. says revenue grew 32 percent to $1.18 billion in the second quarter, slightly above analyst expectations. It had a net loss of 8 cents per share, mainly due to stock compensation expenses following its IPO. Adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share matched Wall Street's expectations. Investors weren't impressed and after a brief spike, Facebook's stock tumbled. It was Facebook's first quarterly earnings report since public trading began on May 18, 2012. Facebook now has 955 million users, up about 50 million during the quarter.

North Korea's former cheerleader first lady ditches drab outfits

SEOUL, South Korea - The father fell in love with a dancer. Now the son has fallen in love with a singer.

The talk of Seoul today is all about the 24-year-old ex-singer-turned-first lady of North Korea, Ri Sol-Ju, who was officially mentioned by North Korean TV on Wednesday as the "comrade wife to Marshall Kim Jong Un."

A new video was aired today of the two walking arm-in-arm, a rare lovey-dovey image which analysts in Seoul say is aimed to make North Korea's young leader appear "stable and fatherly."

Kim, 28, rose to power earlier this year after the death of his father Kim Jong Il last December. His father never appeared in public with an official wife, but is known to have had four or five wives. Jong Un was born to Jong Il's fourth wife, a celebrity dancer named Koh Young-Hee.

The new lady in the spotlight, Ri, is a popular singer who was spotted performing on stage numerous times in the past few years. There is still no confirmation on when they were married, but the two are known to have a child together, according to the National Information Service, South Korea's intelligence agency.

Ri is from an average family, graduated Geumsung 2 Middle School in Pyongyang and studied abroad in China majoring in vocal music.

She has also visited South Korea in 2005 as a member of North Korean cheerleading team for the Asian Athletics Championship held in Incheon, said the agency. Ri was one of the 90 cheerleaders back then who chanted "We are one!"

The cheerleaders wore Nike caps, danced with South Korean college students, and attended a dinner party with government officials. There's speculation that she also might have participated in an inter-Korean teenagers' event in 2003 to plant trees.

But what has attracted the most attention in Seoul today is her beauty and sense of fashion. She wore colorful green, burgundy, and yellow outfits, polka dot patterns, open-toe pumps, and even a chic brooch on one of her dresses. North Korean women usually wear their traditional costume, or monotone black or grey suits to public events.

"I was surprised because she was so up-to-date in fashion. My friends think she's very pretty too," said Hyun-Sun Kim, 22, a nurse.

"I think Ri Sol Ju possesses a classic traditional Korean beauty, a round face and clean skin," said Edward Han, 52, a South Korean businessman. "And she's got that image of an obedient wife which sure would be popular among the elders especially."

We get to have fun writing about the issues that mom struggle with and you get the benefit of two perspectives on the same subject.? Here is the question Sherry and I will both be answering this time:

"I was wondering if you had any insight to those hard years when you have a lot of littles [only] but still need to teach the foundational subjects.? I'm looking for practical helps.? I'm really struggling right now.? My children are 11 mo., 3 yrs, 5 yrs, 7 yrs, and 9 yrs. old? No matter what I use as far as [homeschool] curriculum, it's the day to day management of home, cleaning, school, training, nursing, putting out 'fires', etc. that I can't seem to get a handle on."? ~


First of all, may I just validate these moms in feeling that this season of having a bunch of little muffins and no big helpers is a lot of work *hugs* - but the fruit of your efforts when children are just a little older can be so very sweet.? I remember it clearly.? I was so busy, really doing everything myself.? *smile*? And life is still very busy for me today as a mother of 9, but now some of our littles have grown to become great contributors in the family functioning, which is so good not only for practicality, but for their own character.??

Here is what I would encourage you to consider doing as a mom of many "littles", in this order:

  1. Make sure you get enough sleep
  2. Spend time in God's Word every morning
  3. Drawing on husband support
  4. Eat healthy foods
  5. Implementing some child management strategies
  6. Implementing a weekly routine
  7. De-clutter and organize your home

Now I know this looks like a lot of huge things to tackle - please try not to be overwhelmed!? *smile*? And I know that just finding the time to seek help for yourself by reading posts like these can feel overwhelming in itself.? Just take one piece at a time, and each one can improve life and your outlook on it and help you get to the next step.? I also hope that mine and Sherry's posts can bring you vision and hope for your future, which in itself can lift one's spirits.??

I'll expand on each of these steps below, but here's the reasoning of this approach:? (1) Getting enough sleep can help you feel like you can cope with life in general.? This means getting to bed at a decent hour so that you can rise early and get a good start; and it may mean taking a nap daily.? And (2) you'll then be able to stay awake for some time in God's Word every morning, starting your day off with the Lord who loves you and can guide you.? His Word will bring direction, information, peace, blessing, and strategy.? (3) Eating good, whole foods will bring you more energy, vitality, and minimize your time in the kitchen because your children won't be hungry (or falling apart) so often.? (4) By implementing some child management strategies you can keep kids safe and your house from being destroyed while you're adjusting to a new life approach.? *smile*? Now, (5) you need a proactive plan for your entire week.? Instead of reacting every day, hoping that the important things get done such as meals, quality time with kids and husband, and a clean home (which rarely do happen in reaction-mode), you can budget your time, and make sure that all the important things get done every week.? Then (6), when you can plan a daily time to work a bit at a time on de-cluttering and organizing your home, then you can move yourself towards maintaining an orderly, pretty stress-free home, instead of drowning in it.? And (7), my husband, Bob, encourages you to ask for support from your husband, as you take on a new plan for your family.? Now I'll break these steps down in to more detail for you - don't worry.? *hugs*? *smile*



1. Make sure you get enough sleep?

I'll tell you up front, this takes discipline.? *smile*? You may not realize it, but it does.? Because staying up late to watch TV, or do projects that you never get to otherwise, will not serve you well in your daily responsibilities.? Of course there is time to rest and relax, though!? It's important to have a balanced life.? But there must be time for that during the day time, or early evening, or weekend, so that you can get to bed in time during the week to enable you to get up early in the morning.? It's important that you be able to stay awake to have time with the Lord every day because He loves you and He will guide you in all of your decision-making.? It's important that you have a shower before the children are up (*wink* yes, you heard me correctly), and do some morning tasks such as making the bed, opening up the window blinds, making coffee if that's what you desire - getting ready to receive and serve your little crew with dedication, commitment, and a smile because you're well-rested and ready.? When a mom is rested, the world is a new color.? *smile*? It's the beginning of being a mom with vitality.

2. Spend time in God's Word every morning

This is so very important.? I've heard it said many times that it is the most important thing you can do to improve life in general, for anyone (but of course you need to be able to stay awake to do so, which is the only reason it is second on my list for you).? Through God's Word you can receive encouragement, direction, ideas, learn to prioritize, make decisions for both yourself and your children that are honoring to the Lord - which brings blessing.? We can get a?better perspective when we spend time with the Lord.? For more detail about how I do this exactly each morning, for how much time, what my approach is, etc.,?you can read my post, This Large Family Mother's Personal Daily Bible Study - At Home.??

You do not need a book study or store-bought study to follow.? Just read His Word - His letters to you - every morning.? Without leaning on the Lord's strength and direction you are trying to do life on your own, by yourself.? But there is no need for that.? If you're not spending time with the Lord every day of course you're feeling like you can't do life!? You can't!? Without Him.? *hugs*? But with Him,

"[You] can do all things through Christ who strengthens [you]." ~ Philippians 4:13


3. Drawing husband support
My husband, Bob, suggests also requesting support from your husband for both mom and children. For example, he could take the children out for a little while even if only for a drive in the car so that mom can have some quiet time, maybe a nap, or time for home projects, etc. It's good for the kids to get out anyway and they will love exploring the world with dad. If nothing else it will give mom a chance to get a breath. We have done this Sundays after church or occasionally on a Saturday. Sometimes Bob will take the kids out for a little walk on the bike path near our house, or he's taken them to a state park to build a camp fire, or to explore the woods. These times even if they're only for an hour or two make a huge difference for me in recharging.

4. Eat healthy foods I grew up eating healthy food and learning all about the benefits of it, and have done even more research and learning in my adult life.? Mine and Bob's most recent discovery is Green Smoothies, and "Whole foods" as a category - and by this I mean whole grain and whole wheat, raw vegetables, fruit, beans, nuts.? These enable people's bodies to feel satisfied for long periods of time, they are filling, energizing, helping people feel alert and awake, and just plain good in general!? *smile*? Processed foods made with white flour (which turns to sugar when it hits our saliva) and sugar sap people's energy, make their brain tired, weaken their immune system making them vulnerable to sickness and much worse, and result in feeling hungry again in about 90 minutes. Many people even find themselves addicted to sugar in their diet, and this is a very powerful and detrimental habit for a mom and her family.

If you desire to serve your family meals four times each day - breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner - and not be spending unnecessary hours in the kitchen, and have children who are satisfied and feeling good longer, whole foods can get you there.? We eat at each meal until we're full (and lower quantities than we did before, because "whole foods" are so much more filling!), and then we leave the kitchen until the next meal.? Done - movin' on.? Don't get me wrong, I love to cook - but I do not like to waste time.? *smile*

5. Implementing some child management strategies
Now we are all about training our children to be obedient, but we have also found that when there are lots of little ones in a family it can be hard to keep up with the speed and magnitude with which children can get in to trouble.? We have 9 children close together in age, and the youngest four were all born within 22 months.? It really feels like quadruplets with that group.? And when one gets in to trouble, the other 3 are right there to multiply the destruction four fold in just seconds.? It's one thing to train one baby or toddler towards safety and obedience in the home; it's a whole different ball game to train a bunch simultaneously.

So when the Lord blessed us with these little muffins so close in age we had to start thinking about parenting a little differently than we did with just two children.? We needed to start implementing some child management strategies to save my sanity.? We began using baby gates, door knob locks, cupboard locks, and adding additional structure in their day to help the children be safe and productively occupied.? Now the children still have plenty of opportunity to learn self control around the house with opportunities to reach books, desk/office supplies, kitchen utensils (safe ones), etc., and when we get a handle on those a bit then we'll remove some of these child safety devices so that the children can continue developing self control and not need these extra things.? But I've not been able to do it all simultaneously without the help of some child management tools.

Below, for example, you can see how we put up a baby gate at our bedroom door which does a few things for us.? It provides a?sanctuary for mom and dad so that the master bedroom is not full of toys and child-proofing because children do not play in there; it gives me?a place to allow the twin babies to have some floor time without the risk of being run over or played with?carelessly by well-meaning young siblings; and it allows our small home to still feel open and not even smaller because the doors are closed.

6. Implementing a weekly routine

This concept of having a weekly schedule has literally changed our life:? how we approach the daily needs and responsibilities, and acquire balance in life.? Time to work and time to play, time to rest, time to exercise, time to read, homeschool, do a hobby, clean the house, serve outside of our family, build a marriage, etc.? It's all a matter of budgeting one's time, and prioritizing in advance when everything will get done.

When I had our third baby I cried out to a dear friend for help with how to do life, she pointed me to Steve and Teri Maxwell's books, namely The Managers of Their Homes.? Their book teaches people why scheduling is God's best plan for them with tons of scripture pointing out why.? And then the Maxwells walk a person through, step-by-step, how to put together a weekly schedule for any type of family:? rural, urban, farming or not, large or small.? Anyone can apply these principles and have success when they decide to embrace it and dive in!? *smile* Now you may be thinking, as I've heard countless times, "But I'm just not a scheduled type of person; I want to just wing it and take life as we go!"? Well, here is a post I've written for you to read then, Scheduling and routines:? you can't have your cake and eat it, too.? Here I will lovingly walk you through coming to see how some sort of plan for your days is really necessary, how it will bless you, and bring great freedom to your life. A weekly schedule can also bless your marriage greatly.? With a weekly routine you can have the home clean and dinner prepared when your husband arrives home from work.? You can have a smile for him (no small feat, I know), and be ready to have some daily quality time with him as well.? I've heard miraculous things from couples who have embraced having a weekly schedule!? Marriages can be transformed, and many people we've known have even decided that they would like to have more children (where before the husband was too overwhelmed by the home, children, and marriage to be open to it!)? Bob and I choose to make marriage a high priority, and this can make life so very sweet, as the Lord intended it to be.

With a plan for your week you can learn how to get it all done.? *smile*? You can learn to be proactive with your time and energy instead of reactive, which takes way more time and energy.? 7. De-clutter and organize your home

This is typically a great need in families, and even more so with many small children that we're trying to provide for.? We pretty much all tend to collect way too much stuff, and the more children, usually the more stuff.? *smile*? But there's hope!

Believe it or not, you can have a home that is uncluttered, spacious feeling, orderly, and fairly easy to maintain.? I'll show you how to do so, and suggest the learning of some new habits that can set you in motion for a new life style.? We live in an 1100 square foot home (plus a 2-car garage) with 11 of us in our family.? You can take a tour of our home if you would like.? *smile*? It's not fancy, but it is not chaotic either, and it feels spacious for it's size because we keep it very uncluttered and organized; and it is truly our favorite place to be.? (Not that it doesn't get covered with toys and activities when the kids play, but when it's time to clean up everything has a "home".)

The reason I have made this step last is because once you have put in to place these other steps then you can have time and energy to de-cluttering and organization in your home.? You can take one step at a time, one room at a time, and have a certain block of time to dedicate to it every single day.? *smile*? I'm telling you, this can transform a home in a huge way.??

I do specify de-cluttering and then organization in that order because it can be a fruitless effort to try to organize a space when it is full of things that one doesn't need.? And it takes too much time to manage too much stuff.? But you may be asking, "How do I know what to get rid of?? Where do I begin?"? I will show you.? *hugs*? With lots of pictures, and ideas, and resources.? Being disorganized is a waste of our time, our energy, and our finances.?

Here is a suggestion for how to begin approaching any of these 7 areas I've listed.? Use a "snow ball approach".? For example, for de-cluttering don't just jump in and take on the whole house, or even the?garage (the largest area of the house and the most complex).? *wink*? Write down small steps for yourself for how you might progress.? Like this.? Goal:? de-clutter every room of the house.? Start with the main floor rooms.??Beginning with?one room, or even just one small space such as a closet or?a kitchen drawer.? This will bring quick success and encouratement.? Work for 15-30 minutes every day.? Once you've done this for a few days, you'll increase in ability and pretty soon you'll have more time to put towards it because you've gotten faster and better at it and you have a little more time on your hands because there is less clutter to manage in your home, and you could work for 30-60 minutes.? Penn State loses one sponsor, others could follow

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? State Farm is pulling its ads from Penn State football broadcasts, while General Motors is reconsidering its sponsorship deal and Wall Street is threatening to downgrade the school's credit rating, suggesting the price of the sexual abuse scandal could go well beyond the $60 million fine and other penalties imposed by the NCAA.

Bloomington, Ill.-based State Farm said it had been reviewing its connection to Penn State since the arrest of retired assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky last November. The insurance company said it will pull ads from broadcasts of Nittany Lions home games but continue to advertise during Penn State's away contests.

"We will not directly support Penn State football this year," State Farm spokesman Dave Phillips said Tuesday. "We just feel it was the best decision."

State Farm had no immediate information on how much money is at stake.

The NCAA imposed unprecedented sanctions against Penn State on Monday, including the fine, a four-year bowl ban and a sharp reduction in the number of football scholarships it may offer.

The governing body also erased 14 years of victories, wiping out 111 of coach Joe Paterno's wins and stripping him of his standing as the most successful coach in the history of big-time college football.

NCAA President Mark Emmert said he relied on a report by former FBI Director Louis Freeh, who found that Paterno and three top officials concealed child sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky more than a decade ago to protect the school and its powerful football program.

With Penn State's once-sterling reputation in tatters, the university could face an exodus of sponsors unwilling to have their brands linked to scandal, said Kevin Adler, founder of Chicago-based Engage Marketing Inc.

Adler said he would advise current sponsors to pull out of their deals with Penn State, adding that most contracts have morality clauses giving advertisers an out.

"I think the public perception is pretty clear and definitive at this point. That brand is damaged beyond the point of short-term repair. It is the sponsorship partner's obligation first and foremost to look after the health of their own brand," Adler said. "None of the sponsors owe Penn State anything."

So far, though, Penn State appears to be hanging on.

GM spokesman Pat Morrissey said the automaker is reviewing its sponsorship but has not made a decision. Morrissey did not immediately return a call about the value of the sponsorship deal.

Other sponsors said they plan to stick with Penn State, including Purchase, N.Y.-based PepsiCo Inc., Pittsburgh-based PNC bank and Pennsylvania's largest health insurer, Highmark Inc.

"Highmark's partnership with Penn State is about health and wellness. We do have a sponsorship with the athletics program. While we routinely evaluate all of our sponsorships, we plan to continue at this time," spokesman Aaron Billger said.

PNC Financial Services Group issued a statement after the July 12 release of the Freeh report that its "ongoing engagement with the university signals our support of the students and traditions of Penn State. ... We believe that the university will learn from this experience and become stronger."

Bank spokesman Fred Solomon said the NCAA sanctions have not changed PNC's position.

Pepsi spokeswoman Gina Anderson said Tuesday the company also stood by its recent statement in response to the Freeh report.

"We are deeply disturbed by the findings of the investigation and the conduct of certain individuals at Penn State University, but will continue to honor our longstanding contract as a campus beverage provider," the statement said.

Moody's Investors Service said Tuesday that it may cut the school's Aa1 rating. The Freeh report, along with the NCAA sanctions, could hurt enrollment and fundraising, and the school is still under state and federal investigation, the rating agency said.

A downgrade could make it more expensive for Penn State to borrow money for expansion or other projects.

Around Happy Valley, as the university and the surrounding area are known, Penn Staters and business owners worry that the NCAA sanctions will drive down attendance at home games and hurt the hotels, restaurants and university-themed clothing shops that rely on the Nittany Lions' loyal football fans.

"Football is absolutely intertwined with the university, therefore the town," said graduate student Will Ethier. "Such hard hits really will hit the town economically." He added: "If one gets sanctioned, everybody else gets sanctioned."

Average attendance at the 106,500-seat Beaver Stadium has long been robust. It ranked no lower than fourth nationally in average attendance each year since 1991, a university spokesman said. And Penn State's alumni association, with more than 165,000 members, is billed as the largest in the world. Already, the team has sold 85,000 season tickets for 2012.

Still, Matt Powell, an analyst with SportsOneSource, a Charlotte, N.C.-based provider of sports business information, said sales of Penn State clothing are dropping, from about $80 million in 2010 to $60 million after the scandal broke last year to possibly $45 million this year.

Chris Stathes, who has a daughter at Penn State and manages a Waffle Shop in State College, said he would not be surprised to see 20,000 or 30,000 empty seats at Beaver Stadium. He said some fans might not want to make the drive to see home games in State College, several hours from Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

"What are you going to watch for?" Stathes said. "They can't advance to any postseason bowl game or anything like that. People are still going to be disgusted over the whole thing."

Several Penn State fans, whether they buy tickets or watch on TV, insisted they would not lose interest in the team.

"We will go to every game," said Sam Zamrik, 80, a retired professor of engineering and a season ticket holder for 40 years. "They need our support."

First-year head coach Bill O'Brien said of the team's fans Tuesday: "I would tell them to renew their season tickets. I would tell them to move forward, turn the page. I would tell them we've got a football team that's working extremely hard for this upcoming season."
