Manhattanhenge: Sun to align perfectly with New York street grid

Manhattanhenge: The street grid of New York's oldest and largest borough will briefly transform into a Stonehenge-like sundial, as the sun alights up the north and south sides of every cross street.

New Yorkers will be treated to a special sight tonight: Today is one of two days a year when the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan's street grid. As the sun sets on the Big Apple, it will light up both the north and south sides of every cross street.

The event has been dubbed "Manhattanhenge" for the way it turns New York City into a?Stonehenge-like sun dial.

The sun sets perfectly in line with the Manhattan street grid twice a year, explains astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson on the Hayden Planetarium website.

Here are the best viewing times for Manhattanhenge 2012:

May 29 at 8:17 p.m. EDT

July 12 at 8:25 p.m. EDT

There are two other days when the sun isn't perfectly aligned with the grid, but still puts on a show. On these two days, May 30 and July 11 this year, you see a full sun sitting on the horizon when looking down the cross streets, rather than the half orb. Here are the best times to catch the full sun setting on New York City:

May 30 at 8:16 p.m. EDT

July 11 at 8:24 p.m. EDT

The best way to watch Manhattanhenge, Tyson says, is to get as far east as possible on one of the city's major cross streets, such as 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd or 57th streets, and look west toward New Jersey. (The streets immediately adjacent to these wide cross streets will work fine, too, but the view won't be quite as stunning.) Standing on 34th or 42nd street provides a particularly nice view, as the views include the?Empire State Building?and the Chrysler Building. It's a good idea to get to your spot 30 minutes early, so you can beat out the other sun worshippers.

Direct lender payday loans | Business Finance News

Direct lender payday loans are the same as cash advance loans, or just plain payday loans. The key point here is that you will deal directly with the lender, and there are no middlemen involved, as you might find with a payday loan referral website.

It is important to deal directly with your payday loans office to avoid overpaying for your loan activity. A direct lender may have slightly lower fees or interest rates. In general, payday loan interest fees run from hundreds to thousands of percent, but they are for such a very short time period that an extremely high interest rate is not an issue. For a short term loan of $100, most fees are within the $15 to $25 range, which is much less than most overdraft check penalty fees, or late payment fees for credit cards.

Your online direct lender should have a secure website. You can know the website has modern technology to protect your sensitive information by seeing the gold SSL lock icon on the web page, and the address for a link should begin with ?https? instead of just ?http.?

The way a direct lender payday loan works is simple. You fill out the online application, which will have any personal identification, employment, and banking information the lender needs on it.

'Switched At Birth': Why This TV Show Tells The Story Of My Life

By April Bell

April is a junior at Lincoln Park High School. She?s a student reporter for The Mash, a weekly teen publication distributed to Chicagoland high schools.

ABC Family?s ?Switched at Birth? centers around Daphne Vasquez and Bay Kennish, two girls who were switched at birth, and the complications their families face. And Daphne is deaf ? as if being switched at birth isn?t dramatic enough.

I?m hearing impaired, so I was excited when I heard about the show ? finally, a show about hearing impaired teens! I want people to understand the lives of deaf and hearing-impaired teens, and I thought ?Switched at Birth? is perfect.

Sure, some of the plot lines are overly dramatic and often silly, with episode after episode of characters fighting over small things. However, the show?s portrayal of deaf teens? loneliness and struggles to fit in is dead-on. Daphne and I have similar experiences; I?m not deaf, but I studied lip reading and I have to compensate in difficult situations. Like Daphne, I have really supportive friends, but it?s hard for me to follow conversations in loud places or parties, so I still feel left out once in a while.

?Switched at Birth? shows people how hard it is for Daphne and me ? although we may make it look easy ? to keep up with the rest of the world. When walking around with a friend, I often have trouble hearing what they?re saying, as Daphne does in the show. Daphne prefers chatting one-on-one, as do I, because it?s easier to keep track of the conversation.

The major problem I have is that I need people to repeat what they say a lot, and sometimes after three times, they get frustrated. Daphne has this same problem ? oftentimes she?ll need something repeated in a dark room because it?s difficult to read lips.

Daphne also has met some people who give her a hard time because they don?t understand that she needs help. This is also well portrayed because I face the same problem almost every day and just have to learn to live with it. ?Switched at Birth? showcases all these situations well.

But the show also shows how Daphne is still a normal teenager who knows how to have fun: She watches movies and hangs out with her friends. This is why I love the show ? it shows that Daphne and I can both do the same things as everyone else does; we just do them a little differently.

Hotel cat back on duty | Pets - Home

NEW YORK -

Matilda the cat is back at work at New York City?s Algonquin Hotel.

The blue-eyed beauty was feeling the love as the hotel reopened Thursday after a five-month, $18 million renovation.

She may not love her new bling, though.

Thanks to a November issue with the Health Department, Matilda now wears a special collar that keeps her away from the hotel?s food-related areas.

The literary lights of the Round Table used to exchange witty remarks over lunch at the Algonquin.

They were accustomed to the succession of cats that had free run around the hotel for 80 years.

After prowling within her parameters, the silky-coated hostess curled up behind the computer at the front desk.

The New York Post talked to a guest who made a beeline for the feline.

Tim Houghton of Washington says Matilda "responded with dignity" to his overtures.

Samsung's Music Hub launches in UK, France and Germany, offers 100GB storage, unlimited streaming

Samsung's Music Hub launches in UK, France and Germany, offers 100GB cloud and unlimited streaming of 19 million tracks for a price

We already knew Samsung was dipping a toe in the music market, and now it's officially landed. Music Hub will launch with the GSIII in the UK, France, Germany, Italy and Spain. It's fair to say the electronics giant will be trampling on a fair number of toes, with Music Hub offering both streaming -- from 7 Digital's catalog of 19 million -- as well as recommendations, and a 100GB iTunes Match-esque cloud service. You'll need to trump up £ / €9.99 (about $16) if you want the premium features (unlimited streaming from the catalog and the online storage of your library,) while the free option will let you listen to matched / purchased tracks anywhere (from your phone or the web interface). Samsung's clearly taking a holistic approach with Music Hub, and it'll be a standard feature on its phones going forward (plus potentially Smart TVs and even Fridges). It might not just be restricted to its own hardware eco-system either, with some talk of it coming to other mobile devices in the future, officially, this time.

As count goes on Egypt candidates reach out to rivals

As final votes are counted the apparent winners of the first round of Egypt's landmark presidential vote reached out to rival candidates ahead of a June run-off.

Unofficial results suggested that the top two out of 12 candidates were the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohammed Mursi and Ahmed Shafiq, a former premier under ousted Hosni Mubarak.

The Brotherhood called a meeting of various candidates on Saturday afternoon, but the campaigns of Abul Fotouh, former foreign minister Amr Mussa and Nasserist candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi said the three would not attend.

At a news conference later on Saturday, Mursi appealed to Egyptians to pursue the goals of the revolution, a day after his movement said the nation was "in danger."

He said he was confident the results of the June 16 and 17 run-off "will serve the revolution and the interests of the Egyptian people."

He also sought to reassure those who fear a Mursi win would serve the interests of the Muslim Brotherhood ahead of the country.

"As a president, I will be the president for all Egyptians. (My relationship) with the Brotherhood will be the same as all Egyptians," he said.

On Friday night, the Brotherhood said it was seeking to create a coalition of forces to challenge Shafiq.

"We call on all sincere political and national forces to unite to protect the revolution and to achieve the pledges we took before our great nation," it said.

"The slogan now is: 'The nation is in danger'," Essam al-Erian, deputy head of the Brotherhood's political arm, told AFP.

Shafiq also called for broad support from former rivals, calling on his competitors by name to join him and promising there would be no return to the old regime.

"I reach out to all the partners and I pledge that we would all work together for the good of Egypt," he told a news conference.

Addressing young people who spearheaded the 2011 revolt, he said: "Your revolution has been hijacked and I am committed to bringing (it) back."

"I pledge now, to all Egyptians, we shall start a new era. There is no going back."

As the top two candidates worked to rally support for the run-off, leftist candidate Hamdeen Sabbahi, who came third, said he was to file a complaint over alleged voting irregularities in the first round.

"We will file appeals and we will then determine whether or not we accept the results," Sabbahi said.

"It is our right to get a response to our appeals. We will be in the second round, God willing."

"The number of votes we got says the future is open for us: we will continue with the revolution until we reach victory," Sabbahi told a crowd of supporters outside his campaign headquarters in Cairo.

He refused to publicly back either of the two frontrunners, and said he would not accept the number two position in the country.

"I will not accept to be a vice president. You have the right to give your vote to whoever you want, it's up to you to decide," he told the crowd.

A Shafiq-Mursi run-off looks likely to further polarise a nation that rose up against the authoritarian Mubarak 15 months ago but has since suffered endemic violence and a declining economy.

The contest presents a difficult choice for activists who led the revolt against Mubarak. For them, choosing Shafiq would be to admit the revolution had failed, but a vote for Mursi would threaten the very freedoms they fought for.

Independent analyst Hisham Kassem said the situation "is one of the most difficult political situations that Egypt has ever known."

"We face the risk of maintaining the Mubarak regime, or Islamising the country," he told AFP.

Former US president Jimmy Carter, whose Carter Centre monitored the elections, told journalists that the process had been "encouraging" but noted that he and his monitors had faced unprecedented constraints.

"I would say that these (elections) have been encouraging to me," he said, adding that authorities had imposed "constraints placed on us as witnesses that have never been placed on us before."

He said minor "haphazard" violations had been observed, but there did not appear to be systematic irregularities that favoured any one candidate.

Erian said on Friday it was "completely clear" that Mursi and Shafiq had topped the vote and would compete in the June 16-17 run-off.

He said Mursi had won 25.3 percent of the vote and Shafiq 24 percent, with Sabbahi at 22 percent.

Both Mursi and Shafiq had been written off as long shots just weeks before the historic election in which Egypt voted for the first time to elect a president after Mubarak's ouster in a democratic uprising.

The election, with 50 million eligible voters, was hailed by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who congratulated Egypt on its "historic" election and said Washington was ready to work with a new government in Cairo.

Electoral commission officials said turnout was around 50 percent over the two days.

The election follows a tumultuous military-led transition from autocratic rule marked by political upheaval and bloodshed, but which also witnessed free parliamentary elections.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, in power since Mubarak's downfall, has pledged to restore civilian rule by the end of June.

USC men reach NCAA tennis final

The top-seeded USC men's tennis team defeated rival UCLA, 4-1, in a wild NCAA semifinal at Athens, Ga., and earned a chance to win its fourth consecutive national championship Tuesday. The Trojans (32-1) will meet third-seeded Virginia at 2 p.m. PDT in Athens. USC beat the Cavaliers in last year's final.

Virginia defeated seventh-seeded Pepperdine to reach the championship match. Lightning and thunder interrupted action midway through the first sets of both semifinal matches, forcing them to move indoors to be played out on two courts apiece.

On the women's side, top-seeded UCLA earned a thrilling 4-3 victory over fifth-seeded USC in Athens. The Bruins (26-2) will face second-seeded Florida (26-1) on Tuesday at 10 a.m. PDT. The Gators advanced to the final with a 4-3 win over third-seeded Duke.

Rafael Nadal showed he's still the man to beat on clay, defeating Novak Djokovic, 7-5, 6-3, Monday in a rain-delayed final at Rome to win his record sixth Italian Open and regain the No. 2 ranking.

After losing to Djokovic in seven straight finals ? including Rome last year ? Nadal has now won two straight against the top-ranked Serb after also capturing the Monte Carlo Masters on clay. Nadal also moved ahead of Roger Federer in the rankings with the French Open starting Sunday.

Djokovic, drained in Monte Carlo after the death of his grandfather, made 41 unforced errors in this match. His double-fault on the last point gave Nadal the 49th title of his career and his 35th on clay.

Nadal did not drop a set all tournament to clinch his third Italian Open victory in four years.

Ex-NFL players, wives file concussion lawsuit

Thirteen former football players and five of their wives filed a civil lawsuit in Los Angeles Superior Court against the NFL and helmet manufacturer Riddell, seeking damages for injuries and financial losses they incurred allegedly from concussive brain injuries sustained during the players' professional careers.

The plaintiffs include former USC receivers Johnnie Morton and John Jackson and former UCLA receiver Mike Sherrard.

The suit says the NFL and other defendants "deliberately ignored, misrepresented and actively concealed" information regarding the damaging effects of repetitive concussive brain injuries.

It appears as though the Ducks found a solution for the heavy workload starting goalie Jonas Hiller endured this season, their search for a quality backup winding up in Sweden.

On Monday, they signed goaltender Viktor Fasth to a one-year contract worth $1 million. His contract is a one-way deal. The 29-year-old has been named the Swedish Elite League's goaltender of the year the last two seasons. With AIK Stockholm, he had five shutouts with a 2.12 goals allowed average and .931 save percentage in 46 games last season.

Former West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart, who was hailed as Rich Rodriguez's successor but wound up leaving the school in a messy split, died Monday of what athletic department officials said was an apparent heart attack. He was 59.

Stewart's family notified the university and said Stewart had been out golfing with the longtime friend who hired him as head coach, former athletic director Ed Pastilong. West Virginia spokesman Michael Fragale said he had no further details, and Pastilong couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

What ?Animal House? can teach us about marketing

National Lampoon?s Animal House is over 30 years old yet when the movie runs on premium cable channels it still draws an audience. ?Is it because of the excellent cast ? ?That probably has something to do with it but more likely the reason we like to watch the movie is because it takes us back to a time when we were in college. A time before deadlines, mortgage and car payments. ?People remember moments and Animal House is great at taking us back to moments of our lives that were less stressful. ?Marketers should remember this.

Even if you?re not old enough to associate what it was like to go to college in the 60?s there is a good chance you remember where you saw Animal House for the first time. ?For me it was in a packed movie theater in Yonkers, New York. ?I remember waiting on line and going with two of my best friends. ?To this day whenever I watch the movie it takes me back to that night.

With all the stress living today people often like to look back and remember the ?good times?. ?Products that help them get there make an emotional connection with consumers that all the marketing dollars in the world cannot duplicate. ? Remember, for example, that first cup of Starbucks or that first McDonalds burger ? ?How about the first time you had an Oreo and a nice big glass of ice cold milk ?

To escape stress people often look for products that either make them feel better about themselves or product that takes them back emotionally to a better time when things were easier and less stressful. ? It doesn?t work for every product or brand but establishing that emotional connection is a great way to reach out to consumers.

It all goes back to asking a basic question; ?what are we really selling?? ?Here are some examples;

Remember that consumers often do not make purchases based on logic. It isn?t logic that causes someone to pay a 40% premium for an Apple iMac over a PC it?s that emotional brand connection.

Animal House is a great movie to watch and watch again because it takes us back to a time when were less stressed and the only thing we had to worry about was school or what to do tomorrow. ?Now, more than ever, consumers are looking for ways to help them put the daily stress of their lives on hold and some products can actually fill that need.

One more thing?.

There has been a headline recently, via a press release, that a majority of consumers research products online before purchasing them. ?That is pure bullshit and PR spin. ?I mean is anyone going to really research a new brand of cracker, salad dressing or cereal online before making their purchase ? ?Of course not. ?The bottom line is that there is a direct correlation between the importance of the purchase and how much time someone will spend online researching products. ?Usually the higher the price the more research online.

Crowdfunder Closes $400K Seed Round, Launches Public Beta

Screen Shot 2012-05-24 at 11.37.44 AMCrowdfunder, the Los Angeles-based startup creating an online platform for the "crowdfunding" of startups and small businesses, has launched the first public beta version of its site this week. The launch comes on the heels of Crowdfunder closing on $400,000 in seed funding from a group of angel investors earlier this month, CEO Chance Barnett tells me. But: Since the crowdfunding portion of the JOBS Act has not taken effect yet -- it's still being reviewed by the Securities and Exchange Commission -- Crowdfunder is holding a unique sort of beta launch, with a series of contests planned in cities across the US.

Are You Spending Too Much Time On E-mails? ? Sapience Blog

A large majority of employees today spend bulk of their time on PCs. They extensively use emails to share information. However, there is a growing realization that emails are one of the most inefficient activities at the workplace.

The CEO of a large global IT Services company has even banned emails for internal communication ? Read this:
Company ban on email gives employees a break, and maybe a different type of headache

There are many reasons why emails can become a wasteful activity for the company instead of a productive means of communication. Many of us keep the email pop-up enabled. This causes us to look at every incoming email. This continuous switching between one?s work and emails is highly inefficient. Emails are copied to more people than they need to, thus leading to an endless chain of replies that are going to people who don?t need to be on the email thread. Instead of reviewing and replying quickly to every email, it is often better to reply once others have expressed their opinions.

Is banning e-mails the solution? Not really. It is a powerful tool that has no superior substitute. The right approach is training employees on effective usage of emails. It will also be very useful to have a solution that automatically tracks time spent on e-mails during work hours. This will let us compare time spent on e-mails versus other core activities that are more important to accomplish one?s goals. Then one can optimize the e-mail time and keep it within reasonable bounds.
This is where Sapience can contribute. It records time on e-mails and other work related activities automatically for each person, enabling self-improvement. Managers can see activity break-up of work time for their teams, compare between them to see what optimal usage can be, and set improvement goals.

Write to us at sales@innovizetech.com? and find out how Sapience can boost your enterprise productivity.

ICANN resumes bids for new Internet suffixes

(AP) ? The organization overseeing a major expansion of Internet addresses has reopened its system for letting companies and organizations submit proposals.

The Web-based system had been shut down since April 12 because of a software glitch that exposed some private data. At the time, the system was supposed to reopen within four business days. But it took longer to fix the problem and to notify affected applicants.

Up to 1,000 domain name suffixes ? the ".com" part of an Internet address ? could be added each year in the most sweeping change to the domain name system since its creation in the 1980s.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, has extended the deadline for submitting proposals to May 30.

Each application costs $185,000.

Obama birth certificate OK by Arizona official

Bennett said Wednesday that Hawaii's verification of President Barack Obama's?birth records meets necessary requirements and that the president will appear on Arizona's ballot in the fall. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin, File)

(AP) ? Arizona's secretary of state said Wednesday that Hawaii's official verification of President Barack Obama's birth records meets necessary requirements, meaning the president's name will appear on Arizona's ballot in the fall.

The inquiry launched recently by Arizona Secretary of State Ken Bennett gave official weight to a long-simmering political controversy generated by those who say that Obama was not born in the U.S. and therefore is ineligible to hold the nation's highest office.

The Obama administration attempted a year ago to dismiss the conflict by releasing his long-form birth certificate showing that he was born in Hawaii.

But skeptics maintained their stance and eventually Bennett announced he would seek further verification at the request of numerous voters who contacted his office, even saying he was prepared to leave Obama's name off the state's ballot in November.

Bennett, a Republican, said in a written statement that Hawaii officials "have complied with the request, and I consider the matter closed."

Bennett's office says Obama's name will appear on Arizona's November ballot as long as he wins his party's nomination and all paperwork is properly completed.

Obama campaign spokesman Mahen Gunaratna noted that Bennett also is Arizona campaign co-chair for Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney. Gunaratna said Bennett's inquiry will have no bearing on the election, "But it does present an opportunity for Mitt Romney to finally rise to the occasion and denounce the extreme voices in his party."

The Romney campaign responded saying the candidate has made his stance on the issue clear.

"I think the citizenship test has been passed," Romney said to CNBC in April, a statement relayed to The Associated Press by his campaign on Wednesday. "I believe the president was born in the United States. And there are real reasons to get this guy out of office."

Hawaii State Registrar Alvin Onaka sent the document Tuesday confirming the information on Obama's birth certificate, such as the Honolulu hospital where he was born and the names and ages of his parents.

Hawaii officials have repeatedly verified Obama's citizenship as skeptics have maintained that the president was born in Kenya, his father's home country.

State and federal courts also have rejected lawsuits over the issue.

The verification process was the subject of three months of back and forth, with Hawaii officials initially saying Bennett had to show why he needed the information as part of ordinary business.

Other Arizona officials over the last year have raised questions about Obama's birth certificate.

Last year, the state Legislature passed a bill that would have required presidential candidates to prove their citizenship before their names could appear on the state's ballot.

The proposal was vetoed by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, who called the measure "a bridge too far."

Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America, had a volunteer posse launch an investigation into the issue, saying in March there was reason to believe Obama's long-form birth certificate is a computer-generated forgery.

Arpaio, known for his hardline stance on illegal immigration, said Wednesday the information given to Bennett's office doesn't dispel his suspicions. He vowed to continue his posse's investigation until Hawaii officials provide microfilm of the original birth certificate or the original document itself.

Earlier this spring, Bennett's office made a change that requires candidates to complete a new form asking eligibility questions, including whether they are natural-born U.S. citizens.

In the past, political parties drafted their own certification documents that Arizona officials say didn't consistently address the issue of qualifications.

Democrat state Rep. Chad Campbell, Arizona's House minority leader, called on Bennett to step down as co-chair of the Romney campaign, saying if he doesn't, then he should resign as secretary of state.

Bennett declined through a spokesman to comment on Campbell's appeal.

King Felix outduels Rangers' Darvish

By TIM BOOTH

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 1:05 a.m. ET May 22, 2012

SEATTLE (AP) - Felix Hernandez said the hype and attention paid to Texas star Yu Darvish had no bearing on his level of intensity heading into Monday night.

Seattle's ace was too focused on making sure the best offensive team in baseball didn't continue Hernandez's unusual run of rough starts.

"Attack and just throw strikes," Hernandez said. "If you get behind against this lineup, it's a problem."

Hernandez shut down Texas' sluggers for eight innings, while Ichiro Suzuki and the Mariners bats were chasing Darvish after just four innings in the shortest start of the season in Seattle's 4-1 win over the Rangers.

Seattle became the first team that Darvish had to face for a second time and for a second time he struggled to solve the Mariners. Darvish (6-2) labored through 96 pitches and a season-high six walks and was denied the chance to become the first seven-game winner in the majors.

Only Seattle's inability to take advantage of a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning kept Darvish's line from being worse. Suzuki singled and tripled off his countryman, driving in a pair of runs as Seattle built on its three-game sweep of Colorado over the weekend.

"He can throw anything at any time, obviously has a good arm and keeps the ball down for the most part," Seattle manager Eric Wedge said. "But you really have to tip your hat to our guys offensively. Our guys went up there, made him come into the zone and when he didn't, took the passes when we could."

While most of the attention went to Darvish and his impressive run of success, Hernandez was trying to atone for a pair of forgettable starts against the Yankees and Cleveland where Hernandez allowed a combined 21 hits and 10 earned runs.

He was back to his top form against the Rangers. Hernandez allowed six hits, struck out seven and walked two. He took a shutout into the eighth before Mitch Moreland hit a leadoff homer to deep right-center field. It marked the 15th straight game Texas hit at least one homer, but Hernandez finished off the inning, and his night with his second strikeout of slugger Josh Hamilton.

"How hot (Hamilton) is right now that was pretty good," Hernandez said.

It helped Hernandez that he was playing with a lead and thanks in part to some lessons learned from the first time Seattle saw Darvish. Namely patience.

While Darvish was off to a solid start - subtract the five runs in the first two innings against the Mariners in his debut and his ERA since then is 1.94 - all of his starts were against teams seeing the Japanese star for the first time.

And Seattle had plenty of success - for two innings - when they saw Darvish for the first time back in April. The Mariners rattled Darvish for eight hits and five earned runs that day, but the Rangers gave Darvish enough offense to make that first start a victory.

This time, Seattle had nearly as much offensive success - trading hits for walks - but the Rangers bats were getting silenced by Hernandez.

Darvish's troubles started almost immediately. He walked Michael Saunders with one out in the first and Suzuki immediately ripped a shot over first base and down the right field line. But instead of bouncing off the short-wall in foul territory and into the outfield, the ball hit and stayed at the base of the wall. Saunders scored from first and Suzuki strolled into third and an early lead for Hernandez.

Seattle gave Hernandez a bigger cushion in the third inning. With two runners on and one out, Suzuki sent a single into shallow center that scored Dustin Ackley from second. Saunders was aggressive and tried to go first to third on the hit, and instead jogged home when Hamilton's throw from center soared over third baseman Adrian Beltre and into the Rangers' dugout on the fly. Rookie Jesus Montero followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center that scored Suzuki.

Darvish continued to struggle in the fourth, walking the bases loaded to start the inning. Ackley's RBI single scored John Jaso, but Darvish got infield groundouts by Saunders and Suzuki and a strikeout of Kyle Seager to end the inning and limit the damage. Montero added an RBI double in the seventh off reliever Yoshinori Tateyama, who was called up on Monday after Neftali Feliz was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Darvish had pitched into at least the sixth inning of all eight of his previous starts.

"I was apologetic. I wasn't able to go deep in the game as a starter should," Darvish said through an interpreter. "Giving up those runs with only four hits; overall the approach and substance wasn't that good."

Notes: Texas' streak of 15 straight games with a homer is the longest in baseball this year and fourth longest in franchise history. ... With Feliz on the DL, the Rangers announced that Scott Feldman will start Wednesday's series finale in Seattle. ... Seattle C Miguel Olivo (groin) was 1-for-3 and caught five innings during his first rehab start with Triple-A Tacoma. Wedge said Olivo needs to catch a full nine innings before the Mariners consider bringing him back.

Len slams 'Dancing' star William's sexy freestyle

Adam Taylor / ABC

The crowd loved Cheryl and William's freestyle on Monday, but judge Len Goodman? Not so much.

By Ree Hines

The pre-finale performance show usually sees mellow ballroom behavior from the judges on "Dancing With the Stars." After all, at this point in the competition, the dancers are presumably the best of the best and the routines are bound to be fairly good. So the panel tends to focus on the positives and let their scores speak for themselves -- except not this time.

No, on Monday night, head judge Len Goodman went rogue and broke from the friendly banter and high-praise his fellow panelists dished out and instead revealed exactly what was on his mind.

Fans of real criticism on the show would normally cheer an unexpected treat like that, but there was just one problem: Len's outburst wasn't exactly well aimed.

After heaping accolades on finalist William Levy when the star delivered a 30-point cha cha in the judges' pick round, Len attacked the actor over his follow-up freestyle.

William hit the floor with a sexy, mash-up Latin routine that transitioned from a tango beat to a smooth salsa, with dashes of cha cha and samba along the way. It was the perfect pick for the hip-shaking star who started out as a dance newbie, but mastered many Latin routines over the past few weeks.

But Len didn't see it that way.

"For me, it was too predictable," he ranted. "All you do is shake your butt and get the women screaming. I wanted more. I wanted to see something different. I'm fed up with it!?... I didn't want a salsa with lifts!"

And when fellow judge Carrie Ann Inaba dared to claim the routine was groundbreaking, Len interrupted her to shout, "What ground? It was a salsa!"

The freestyle effort won William a score of 29 points -- yes, after all of that guff, Len knocked off?only?one point -- but it didn't win the head judge any love from the ballroom crowd. The audience booed the "Dancing" vet.

Host with most?Tom Bergeron summed it up best.

"I think Len's suffering from bum envy, frankly," he said with a knowing nod to the audience.

But that wasn't the only point in the night when Len broke away from the shared opinions of the panel, and it wasn't the only time the audience booed him.

The second incident happened when Green Bay Packer Donald Driver put on his first dance. In a reworking of his Argentine tango from week five, Donald offered an improved version of the earlier effort.

Carrie Ann applauded the "crispness" of the dance. Bruno Tonioli found it "effective." But Len thought the wide receiver played it too "careful" and knocked off a point from what would have otherwise been a perfect score. The boos were back.

Now, eagle-eyed dance fans might have noticed that Len had a point with that critique. Donald's partner, Peta Murgatroyd, did the bulk of the work in the number while the NFL star hardly had more than a couple of flicks and one strong pivot as his claim to fame. But considering the fact that Katherine Jenkins performed an equally careful paso doble in her first round without so much as a negative word from Len, one has to wonder what the judge's selective problem was.

Luckily for Donald, the problem didn't last long. Once he hit the dance floor for his country-themed freestyle, complete with synchronized line-dance moves and one of the longest and most dangerous lifts the show has seen, Len couldn't think of a single bad thing to say. And for the first time all season, he couldn't think of a reason not to give Donald a well-earned 10 (as Carrie Ann and Bruno did too).

Despite the standout performances from William and Donald, it was Katherine who took the top spot on the leaderboard.

After raking in 30 points for the aforementioned paso (and her first 10 from Len too), her frenetic freestyle scored the same from the panel. Oddly enough, out of all the routines on Monday night, it was the one most worthy of Len's (or Carrie Ann's or Buno's) criticism. While the routine was filled with fast-paced, big-swing content, it was so fast paced that it led to sloppy leg lines and awkward lifts. ?

Despite all the hubbub of the night, by the time it was over, only one point separated the stars in the judges' ranking. That means viewer votes will have a big say in how things play out on Tuesday night's finale, but possibly not the deciding say. There's still one more dance to go -- a routine the dancers have?only?24 hours to prepare for -- and the judges will have the only say about that one.

With the final performances over, which star do you think deserves to waltz away with the mirror ball trophy? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page and be sure to join me and Anna Chan for our weekly "DWTS" live chat Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. ET.
